Dreyfus (2001) discusses the relationship between Distance
Learning and the normal order of education. He argues that since computers came
into being, their use in distance learning has revitalized education. The in
this relationship question is whether the practice of distance education is
valid for acceptance or it has unacceptably low quality.
Nigel Blake (2002) places his discussion on the ideas
presented by Dreyfus. He acknowledges that Distance learning has weaknesses due
to lack of supervision and direct tuition. It thus exposes the theoretical
basis of cybernetics. This according to the educationists is a high-risk
dependency on theories, and can lead to errors.
Garrison, Anderson and Archer (2000)address the issue of
text base teleconferencing using computers. Theirs is a design of education
medium combining the teaching, social and cognitive presence. This they refer
to as the enquiry community. It continues to the comparison between text and
verbal communication as they apply to the education environment.
